How can a university create lasting impact for people and place? The University of Queensland’s new Sustainability Framework and Plan 2026–2029 provides a roadmap for embedding sustainability across every aspect of university life.
Launched in September, the Framework and Plan outline a whole-of-university approach to sustainability across teaching, research, operations, partnerships and governance. Together, they establish a shared vision and action agenda that will guide UQ’s sustainability journey over the next four years.
At the heart of the Framework is the concept of co-becoming with place, recognising the deep interconnection between people and the environments they inhabit. Rather than viewing sustainability as a standalone objective, the Framework encourages an ongoing practice of learning, collaboration and collective responsibility.
The Sustainability Plan translates this vision into action, identifying key transformation themes, priorities and governance arrangements that will guide implementation across the University. Through a coordinated and institution-wide approach, the Plan aims to embed sustainability into teaching, research and operational activities, ensuring these efforts contribute to meaningful and lasting outcomes.
Importantly, the Framework reflects UQ’s commitment to place-based approaches that recognise the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and perspectives in shaping sustainable futures. This commitment is reflected in initiatives such as Campuses on Countries and UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Design Framework, which guide the planning, design and stewardship of university spaces through respectful engagement with Country and Indigenous knowledge systems.
The Framework and Plan also build on UQ’s longstanding commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through teaching, research, operations and partnerships, UQ contributes to all 17 SDGs, helping address some of the world’s most significant environmental, social and economic challenges. The new Framework and Plan provide a coordinated pathway to further strengthen this impact across the University.
As implementation begins, staff and students will have opportunities to contribute to the Plan’s priorities and help drive positive change across UQ. Together, the Sustainability Framework and Plan provide a strong foundation for creating lasting impact for people and place, ensuring the University continues to contribute to a more sustainable future locally, nationally and globally.
