Proud Aboriginal woman Amy Beckett has gone from strength to strength since attending two InspireU camps at The University of Queensland in 2017.

The InspireU program brings Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students from across Queensland for a week-long camp on the UQ St Lucia campus in Brisbane.

Not only did Amy enrol in an Engineering/Economics double degree, in 2018, she also committed to becoming a regular supporter of the InspireU program, in a student ambassador role.

Amy gained further momentum from involvement with the CareerTrackers program, enabling her to intern with professional services companies GHD and Hatch. CareerTrackers is a national organisation that links Indigenous university students with employers to participate in paid, multi-year internships.

Making the most of her opportunities, Amy also signed on for an internship with BHP and gained support from an Australian Indigenous Education Foundation-BHP Tertiary Education Scholarship.

“I hope to have plenty of work experience and industry connections to draw on after my UQ graduation ceremony, currently scheduled for the end of 2024,” Amy said.

“As I have progressed through my university experience, I have appreciated ongoing involvement with UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit - particularly the Outreach and Engagement Team.”

Amy has helped with a range of ATSISU projects, including Tertiary Education Days and graduation events for the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF).
