The University of Queensland (UQ) has conferred an Honorary Doctorate upon one of its trailblazing graduates, Aunty Ivy Trevallion, during the 2024 end-of-year graduation ceremonies. This prestigious recognition celebrates Aunty Ivy’s outstanding contributions as a social worker, community leader, and advocate for Indigenous rights and well-being.

A proud Torres Strait Islander woman from Dauan and Saibai Islands, Aunty Ivy has devoted more than 30 years to advancing the welfare of Indigenous communities. Her work has touched countless lives, especially in her current role as a Social and Emotional Well-being Counsellor, where she oversees programs for children, teens, and families on Thursday Island and across the Torres Strait.

Aunty Ivy’s journey into social work began in 1977 when she enrolled in the Aboriginal Task Force at the South Australian Institute of Technology (SAIT). There, she earned certificates in community development and social work before pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work at UQ in 1982. Her graduation in 1986 marked a historic milestone as one of UQ’s first Torres Strait Islander graduates.

Reflecting on her journey, Aunty Ivy remarked, "My greatest source of inspiration has been the people who I have met, in what circumstances and the countries and cultures they belonged to. They have all inspired me and made me work a lot harder to make sure that I am equipped to assist anybody that walks through the door."

Throughout her career, Aunty Ivy has championed social justice and the preservation of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal customs. Her dedication has not only empowered communities but also paved the way for a more inclusive and equitable society.

By honouring Aunty Ivy with a Doctor of Social Work honoris causa, UQ acknowledges her tireless efforts, her legacy, and her enduring impact on communities across the Torres Strait and beyond.
